Main Prize - 2009
127 are based in Iran and the USA and their album Khal Punk focuses on Iran's current socio-political climate. As rock bands and concerts are banned in Iran, this album takes a satirical approach towards what is going on in the country with an amalgamation of Iranian folk-pop and jazz with a taste of alternative punk music. The band sees their album as one, interrelated combination of songs, with satirical lyrics that target the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in particular. The songs were recorded in the band's small studio in the east of Tehran. 127's aim is to appropriate the Iranian dance-pop music as a platform to convey their politically engaged message.
