Adalet R. Garmiany
Main Prize - 2009
The al-Anfal Campaign, waged against the Kurdish population of Iraq, was led by Saddam Hussein and Ali Hassan al-Majid. It included the use of ground offensives, aerial bombing, systematic destruction of settlements, mass deportation, firing squads and chemical warfare, which earned al-Majid the nickname of Chemical Ali. When Adalet visited a nearby museum in Kurdistan, he was moved by the display of fragments of clothes from people who had been buried alive, as well as watches that had belonged to the dead. The artist was then inspired to create this unique commemorative piece. 'Watches' was a musical performance piece given against a backdrop of images of the watches while 'Hidden Mass' saw cloth garments attached to balloons and set free over the Erbil prison yard.
