Art Therapy for Trafficking Survivors

The sex industry is on the rise in Cambodia. Thousands of uneducated young girls in rural areas are being sold into brothels, often by their families. The girls are enslaved by the brothel owners and forced to have sex with many customers to pay off their debt, which is a form of indentured labour. Many of these women have been exploited since early childhood.

AFESIP provides art therapy for 200 women and girls who have been rescued from sex trafficking. They operate three recovery centres where they teach dance, song, drawing and painting. One of the centres caters for 38 trafficked girls who are under the age of 16. The classes help the women come to terms with their ordeals and learn social skills, preparing them to reintegrate into society.
