Ahmed Wali Kazim Qumarz

Main Prize - 2009
Ahmed's work highlights the plight of Afghanis who, by virtue of their country being located at the crossroads between East and West, have been invaded many times over the centuries. He hopes to show through his piece, 'Attack on Afghanistan', that human rights in Afghanistan are never considered, and have always been violated for political reasons. Under the Taliban, art was heavily restricted and music outlawed. Yet Ahmed's work is not without danger. "Risks are always full of challenges for me and exhibiting work in Kabul is always full of risks," he says. He uses simple media such as wood, plaster, paint, denim and fibres. Ahmed would like in the future to bring new Afghani artists together to exhibit collectively and find a safe place for them to work.
