Andrew Testa

Main Prize - 2009
This series of 90 photographs documents the 1999 war in Kosovo, its aftermath and the 2008 struggle for independence by Kosovo's ethnic majority, the Albanians. This decade-long struggle of the Albanian majority to achieve independence from Serbia has devastated the country. Over 10,000 were killed during the war in atrocities committed against Albanians by various aggressors. With the withdrawal of the Serbians from Kosovo, civilians were again victims by acts of violence by their own people as they engaged in power struggles. Andrew has often taken great personal risk to complete his work: he has been shot at, his armoured car blown up and equipment destroyed.
