Constitution Constipée
Artform: Music
Lapiro's song Constitution Constipée was the anthem for protesters who took to the streets angered after a constitutional change that would all the president to stay in power indefinitely. Laprio is now in jail, persecuted by authorities after he became a symbol of peaceful resistance for those protesting against the erosion of democracy. For nearly two decades, Lapiro has used the power of popular music to campaign for social reform. These acts of peaceful resistance have come at enormous personal sacrifice. Married and the father of five children, he is having to face the prospect of a renewed prison sentence as well as a US$ 600,000 fine.
