Watches and Hidden Mass

Artform: Performance and Installation Art

The al-Anfal Campaign was waged against the Kurdish population of Iraq led by Saddam Hussein and headed by Ali Hassan al-Majid. It included the use of ground offensives, aerial bombing, systematic destruction of settlements, mass deportation, firing squads and chemical warfare, which earned al-Majid the nickname of Chemical Ali. When Adalet visited a nearby museum in Kurdistan, he was moved by the display of fragments of clothes from people buried alive, as well as watches from the dead. This inspired the artist to create unique commemorative piece. Watches was a musical performance piece given against the backdrop of images of the watches while Hidden Mass saw cloth garments attached to balloons and set free over the Erbil prison yard.
