Freedom in the Jungle
Artform: Painting
This Colombian painter has created three paintings in her series, Freedom in the Jungle. The first, Fire in the Jungle, is done in vivid red oils to represent the fury of Colombian citizens facing corruption, violence, and displacement at the hands of the paramilitary and the FARC in Colombia. Jungle in the Moonlight is predominantly blue and symbolizes Colombia at night, without natural light and warmth. It is cold and stagnant, filled with fear, and paralyzed. It shows the effects of living in fear and the trauma after an era that has been so destructive to the human spirit. The final piece, Crystal Jungle, uses greens to portray the rebirth of hope of the people and the beauty and wonder of the natural resources in Colombia.
