Artform: Music

Hich Kas, which means nobody in Persian, is a leading Iranian counter-cultural icon ever since he started rapping publicly about five years ago. To date, he has never been permitted to sell a CD. His lyrics focus on social injustice, the widening gap between rich and poor, street fighting and the international perception of Iranians. His appeal lies in his evolution of Persian hip hop. Hich Kas does not swear in his songs and is a staunch anti-drug advocate. His lyrics also warn young people against the dangers of life on the street. Although he comes from a middle-class background, he has spent much of his youth with some of the violent street gangs that hang out in parks in the poorer districts in central and southern Tehran.
