Welcome, My Brother, to the Camps

Artform: Music

Khatibeh 5 is a group of Palestinian refugees living in the Bourj al Barajeneh refugee camp in Beirut's southern suburbs in Lebanon. The camp was established in 1948 to accommodate an influx of Palestinian refugees from northern Israel. According to the UN, more than 15,000 refugees live in the overcrowded camp. Some estimate that the one square kilometre site is home to 20,000 refugees. Using hip hop and Arabic music, Khatibeh 5 combine political activism, and social commentary to make a non-violent protest about the conditions in which they live. They also use their music to comment about current events in the Middle East.
