The Mad President
Artform: Music
Zambia is a landlocked Southern African country which is ruled by a repressive single-party dictator. After 27 years of devastating socialist policies, residents have incomes lower than those recorded in 1964. Maiko Zulu is an outspoken musician who has put his life on the line for the sake of freedom, social justice and equality. He has in the past faced numerous acts of intimidation by people believed to be government security officers. He has also been termed a radical and his music denied airplay by the national broadcaster. The song, Mad President, talks about the dictatorial conduct of presidents and leaders of government who have assumed roles of the Police, the Judges and the Jury.
