A Tribute to Walter and Albertina Sisulu
Artform: Sculpture
Walter Sisulu was a South African anti-apartheid activist and member of the African National Congress. When he married Albertina in 1944, Nelson Mandela was his best man. Like Mandela, Walter was jailed for life in 1964, serving 26-years behind bars. Marina has unveiled this public sculpture on Diagonal Street in Johannesburg. Walter and Albertina both stood and fought for social justice, says Marina. Theirs was a courageous and long battle for an open and fair society in spite of extreme financial, political and racial hardship. The sculpture represents enduring love and commitment, not only to marriage but to the fight for equal rights for women and the abolition of racial discrimination.
