The Excluded
Artform: Photography
Mass media in Kazakhstan is under government control. Any alternative views are considered undesirable and suppressed. It is through creative projects that the people can have access to information, albeit subtly. The Excluded is a collection of stories that although based on the lives of real people, is presented in a fictional manner. They include young girls being sold into prostitution by their families, elderly women forced to live on the frozen streets and unfair labour practices. The groups writes, "Society must have some kind of a shock to wake up and come to the aid of their neighbours, the starving, those suffering from humiliation, poverty, disease and injustice! We want to erase heartlessness and indifference among the people."
