Arzu Afghan Rug Revitalization
After 30 years of continuous warfare, Afghanistan is ranked by almost every measure among the lowest in the world. The lack of economic empowerment creates a particularly dire situation for women and girls in terms of education and health. According to the Afghan Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, the carpet industry is viewed as Afghanistan's best short-term prospect for re-establishing global trade relations.
This carpet making apprenticeship programme pairs 18 qualified candidates with traditional masters who were persecuted under the Taliban. By improving the quality of Arzu rugs and sales figures, Arzu can support its existing social benefit programmes which provide health and education to women and children.
Highlight:
The revitalization of a traditional craft will economically empower the apprentices and their families.
The Afghan economy can be kick-started through the creative industries.
