Asadulla Pazhman
Main Prize - 2009
Asadulla's work portrays the realities of the lack of awareness and concern of women's rights in Afghanistan. She wants to highlight that some of her countrymen think it acceptable to attack the idea of equality and that many Afghani women believe that it is acceptable for it to be attacked, simply because its become a part of their tradition and they are used to it happening. The women in the cage is an embodiment of the women abandoned across Afghanistan due to the strict moral codes in the country. Asudalla used an Iranian actress as her model to highlight that is artists in a country who are more likely to be imprisoned in a 'cage'. The path in the painting represents the 'only way' for women in Afghan society - to act as a puppet or die.
