Aziza Brahim

Main Prize - Finalist 2009
Aziza Brahim is a Saharawi refugee, trapped in a conflict between Morocco and Algeria. She has never forgotten her roots and dedicates herself to being a voice for the Saharawis, a people fighting for independence. Her songs - all dedicated to the struggle of her people - evoke exile, the right to freedom and human rights. Aziza's concerts are a mix of her songs and speeches about Western Sahara. Her music is censored by the authorities in Morocco and the Western Saharan zone because authorities believe it champions and celebrates those Saharawi people who have been tortured, killed or who have disappeared during the conflict.

“Courage to the Saharawis in their struggle for peace, freedom and democracy. It is unconscionable that their plight is largely ignored by the world. Hopefully Javier Bardem's new film, as well as the work of this brave singer, will help change this.”
