Crown Troupe of Africa
Main Prize - 2009
Lagos is already one of the world's 'mega-cities' - a crime-ridden, seething mass of some 15 million people crammed into the steamy lagoons of southwest Nigeria. Crown Troupe of Africa is based in Bariga, Lagos, and is made up of youths from economically disadvantaged areas. They create work centered on issues affecting the lives of their peers and in doing so hope to inspire positive social change. 'Exodus' examines the dynamics of rural to urban migration. 'Omo Dumping' examines the issue of involuntary migration and excessive urbanisation especially in developing countries like Nigeria, where the average youth dreams of travelling to the city in search of greener pastures, only to find poverty and depression.
