David Hlongwane
Main Prize - 2009
David's brother was killed in a 1985 anti-apartheid demonstration in the Cape Town townships in South Africa. This tragedy has resulted in 'Mama Let Me Go', a series of three linocuts. The first features a distraught mother trying to prevent her son, who is looking out of the window at a passing police van, from leaving the house. The second has the police surveying the scene from the safety of their armoured van. The last linocut shows the intense action and dynamism of the protests themselves.
