Dedy Ibrajoem Moesa
Main Prize - 2009
Dedy's poetry addresses the violence arising from Aceh's long but little-known struggle for independence from Indonesia. Aceh has been fighting to regain control over its oil and gas resources but the successionist protests organised by the Free Aceh Movement have been violently suppressed. Both sides were forced to sign a peace agreement in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami which killed almost 240,000 Acehnese and ended 29 years of fighting. From this destruction, Dedy's work reflects his conviction: "If we just follow the natural way and are respectful to each other as human kind, all of us will get good things, and in a fair way." He also focuses on the fight over natural resources.
