Dream Playhouse Theatre Company

Main Prize - 2009
'The King and I' is a theatrical representation of the corruption, oppression and bad leadership these actors believe is prevalent in Nigerian government. It is set in a peaceful kingdom known as Aiyedun (Good Life) where the calm is shattered when the townsfolk catch a thief and demand his death from their King. But in a twist, the King swaps places with the thief and offers to die in a bid to show mercy. However, when the thief becomes King, his reign is one of terror and corruption, until the original King reappears to challenge him. The troupe believe that by showing that it is the good King, who is the epitome of love, social justice and fairness that triumphs, their play can show that it is possible for leaders of a country to create an enabling and nurturing environment where people can work together to create a 'Good Life'.
