Fateme Gosheh

Main Prize - 2009
Through the eyes of this Swedish-based artist, the audience sees a society's traditional disdain towards women coupled with political fanaticism. There is a woman living under constant threat, painting themes that are taboo in Islam. Fateme's paintings relate to stoning and hanging and revolve around the themes of the extreme infringements of human rights perpetrated on Islamic women. Fateme's work has come with great personal sacrifice. She is not able to visit her home country of Iran, and her website is blocked by the Iranian government. Her exhibitions are deemed controversial enough to be monitored by the Swedish police, after Sweden's Muslim Council notified police that Fateme had incited hatred.
