Youth Prize - Finalist 2009
Although 15 years have passed since the end of the Bosnian War, ethnic tensions remain. This dance troupe is made up of girls who either have Bosnian backgrounds, with a Muslim heritage, or are Catholic Croats. They all come from disadvantaged families whose past has been torn apart by war. Even though society still keeps them apart, these three girls, aged between 12 and 14, have banded together to create 'Heart of Sarajevo'. In this piece, they use the city as a backdrop and show the beauty, not the horror, of Sarajevo. From the Sebilj fountain and the Mosque in the old town to the Catholic cathedral, this unique dance piece is their expression for a peaceful and joyful future, where different ethnic groups work and play together in harmony.
