Kolkata Sanved

Main Prize - 2009
In India, more than 2.3 million girls and women are believed to be working in the sex industry and over 200,000 are trafficked annually. Kolkata Sanved has pioneered the use of dance therapy to give rescued women and girls the tools to realise their potential and turn themselves into confident artists and activists. The true magic of this dance is in its creation. Footwork from the Kathak tradition releases anger, and shape and body placement from Bharatnatyam helps them to rethink their body. Teamwork is developed through folk dance, hand gestures are tools for storytelling, and facial expressions are the keys to revealing emotions. It is through controlling the dance that the women are able to express their deepest, unspoken emotions to the world.
