Breaking Silence and Isolation

It is estimated that at least 313,000 Togolese children aged between five and 15 are currently working as slaves in the urban centres of Togo and in neighbouring Benin, Nigeria and Gabon. Even after Togo criminalised child trafficking in 2005, every year thousands of children leave the country undetected due to the porous West Africa borders. In Ahepe, Togo, 80% of the youth are affected by child trafficking and have poor access to education.

La Conscience will work across the length and breadth of Togo by training an army of youths who will use the stage to denounce child trafficking. In addition to the 1,200 strong troupe are the additions of 400 victims of child trafficking. The youths will then perform in over 60 villages and 300 schools.

Over 250,000 people in Togo will be reached by this national youth movement who will use theatre to communicate the evils of child trafficking and slavery.
