Lapiro de Mbanga

Imprisoned Prize - Winner 2009
Lapiro's song 'Constitution Constipée' was the anthem for protesters who took to the streets angered after a constitutional change that would allow the president to stay in power indefinitely. Lapiro is now in jail, persecuted by authorities after he became a symbol of peaceful resistance for those protesting against the erosion of democracy. For nearly two decades, Lapiro has used the power of popular music to campaign for social reform. These acts of peaceful resistance have come at enormous personal sacrifice. Married and the father of five children, he is facing the prospect of a renewed prison sentence as well as a US$ 600,000 fine.

Read more about Lapiro's prize win in 2009 and subsequent release from prison in 2011.
