Latitude 33
Main Prize - 2009
'Latitude 33' is made by two artists, Rebecca Townsend from South Africa and Alejandra de Solminihac from Chile. Both countries are famous for their rich natural resources. In the past, indigenous people lived from the riches of the land without pretensions of ownership. After living under colonialism and dictatorships, both countries are now seemingly democratic, yet s problems still remain. The base of the artwork is made of black rectangular shapes which also indicate the lines of latitude and longitude that form a selected part of the Southern Hemisphere. On top of this, transparent fused glass gems, representing Southern Africa and South America, are placed. The gems are purposefully not stuck down to allow someone to take one should they so wish.
