The Freedom Space

Poets and musicians from Shiite and Sunni sects have banded together to create an unofficial Green Zone in Baghdad. While citizens live their daily lives against the backdrop of bombs and assassinations, the Freedom Space aims to inspire and give courage to Iraqi artists to heal their fractured community and put an end to the endless cycle of violence. Working just outside the safety of the official Green Zone, scores of artists attend weekly gatherings where they push for peace.

Highlight:

A Summer Festival in Al Zawra Central Park was held and drew audiences from across the city, including Sadr City where musicians cannot publicly hold their instruments.
