Marina Walsh
Main Prize - 2009
Walter Sisulu was a South African anti-apartheid activist and member of the African National Congress. When he married Albertina in 1944, Nelson Mandela was his best man. Like Mandela, Walter was jailed for life in 1964, serving 26 years behind bars. Marina has unveiled this public sculpture on Diagonal Street in Johannesburg. She believes that Walter and Albertina's fight for social justice and a courageous and long battle for an open and fair society in spite of extreme financial, political and racial hardship should be remembered. Her sculpture represents enduring love and commitment, not only to marriage but to the fight for equal rights for women and the abolition of racial discrimination.
