Mashirika Creative and Performing Arts

Main Prize - 2009
'Africa's Hope' is a story of survival and positivity in the context of the Rwandan genocide. It confronts the tragic outcomes of prejudice, racism and division. The genocide is seen through the eyes of a child questioning why evil exists in a world where everyone has a right to live and a right to be. The artistic director of Mashirika was a refugee and some of the cast are genocide survivors, which requires enormous strength from the troupe to create and complete the performance without reliving the trauma. This group has gone beyond those challenges and produced apiece which explores how and why one million people were murdered in the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
