Mimi Chakarova
Main Prize - 2009
Through photography and video, Mimi explores the cycle of sex trafficking from those countries where women are sourced, transited through and eventually arrive to work. She examines the high schools and orphanages of the villages of Moldova and Albania, also looking at 'transit countries' such as Bulgaria and Macedonia, notorious for the brothels and hotels that break down any unwillingness to work as prostitutes. Through powerful imagery, her work takes us inside the dynamics that underlie trafficking so that we might understand them from the women's perspectives. Mimi spent years building relationships with women survivors and has sensitively captured their stories and images on video and in still photographs.
