Mohammad Tamim Sahibzada

Main Prize - 2009
Afghanistan's opium cultivation has wreaked havoc through society. In the majority of cases, the main cause of domestic or social violence is either addiction, or the opium trade itself. The artist's message is simple - opium and addiction are bad for the health and social structure of Afghanistan. An addict loses his personality and individuality. Mohamed emigrated after being abused for his work - "during the Taliban time, I was severely beaten by them for drawing portraits, so I left Afghanistan and emigrated to Pakistan," he says. His drawings with their soft lines are dreamy, yet powerful and expressive, enveloping their supine subjects and the viewer in a narcotic fog.
