Muyiwa Osifuye

Main Prize - 2009
'Kaabiyesi: Courts of Influence' addresses the relationship between modernity and tradition in Nigeria. Central to the story of 'Kaabiyesi' are the Obas, kings of the Yoruba people. The Yoruba are one of the largest ethnic groups in West Africa and have their own language and spiritual beliefs. Up to 21% of Nigeria's population are Yoruba. However, despite the respect the Obas garner from their subjects, official government institutions do not recognise their power or authority. Muyiwa travelled across Nigeria and Benin to explore the contentious issue of the Oba's political and religious significance. Through his photography, Muyiwa highlights traditional justice systems which are a source of extensive debates on human rights versus culture and tradition.
