2011 Freedom to Create Prize celebrations in Cape Town
Freedom to Create supports the courage and creativity of artists around the world who use their art to campaign for inclusive social change and help build more prosperous and creative societies for everyone. Freedom to Create takes art of this nature around the world and this year Cape Town has the great privilege to host the prestigious annual Freedom to Create exhibition and prize event. Of the 2051 entries received in 2011, 50 artists from 145 countries have been shortlisted for the US$100 000 award. These artists include some of the most prominent civilian voices of the pro-democracy uprisings that swept North Africa and the Middle East in 2011, brave female artists from Africa and daring social activists from South East Asia. The winners, who are chosen by a judging panel of leading film, literary, human rights and creative arts luminaries, will be announced on 19 November 2011 at the stunning Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. Kicking off the summer season at Kirstenbosch, the Freedom to Create concert will feature The Gugulethu Tenors, renowned Namibian artist, EeS and Senegalese superstar, Baaba Maal.
