Freedom to Create Prize Ceremony and Concert at Kirstenbosch
Celebrate creativity under the African sky with Freedom to Create and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the 19 November 2011.
Freedom to Create, an international organisation supporting the courage and creativity of artists around the world who campaign for positive social change, is hosting its annual prize event at the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town on Saturday 19 November.
The Freedom to Create Prize awards ceremony and concert will be presented by Leanne Manas and feature The Gugulethu Tenors, renowned Namibian artist, EeS and Senegalese superstar, Baaba Maal.
Freedom to Create Exhibitions have travelled the world. And now, from 2051 entries from 145 countries, 50 artists have been shortlisted this year for the US$100 000 award.
These artists include newsmakers who led the pro-democracy uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East in 2011, outspoken female artists from Africa, brave press photographers working in warzones in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, filmmakers, dancers and photographers from South Africa, anti-establishment theatre in Zimbabwe, daring social commentators from South East Asia, reggae artists whose music promote peace around the world and eye-opening theatre and film from the Americas.
The judging panel includes luminaries such as author Salman Rushdie, ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov, Hollywood actress and activist Daryl Hannah and Nelson Mandela Foundation chief executive Achmat Dangor.

Freedom to Create is donating the proceeds of tickets sales to the Music Therapy Community Clinic, a non-profit organisation in Cape Town that engages underprivileged and previously disadvantaged communities through music therapy.
