Nico Phooko

Main Prize - 2009
This collage piece represents an appeal to the government, the law and community forums to look deeply into the issue of women and child abuse in South Africa. The artist explains how he has 'disfigured' his characters within the picture to symbolise the state of the souls of victimised women and children. Nico says the issue is rife in the townships, yet little is done about it. He believes that when offenders escape punishment, it maddens the community and the victims - "we are sick of these offenses, our sisters, mothers and grandmas are all sick and disturbed. It's high time the world knows how serious this issue is affecting our society particularly in the townships where the majority of black people live."
