Ommolbanin Shamsia Hassani

Main Prize - 2009
Ommolbanin is one of an emerging group of women Afghan artists, based in Kabul. 'From Sound to Image' represents the situation in her country. It is made up of two different parts. One is the 'lectures behind the microphones, the colourful talks on how some groups care about the lower class of the society'. The second part describes the poor condition of the people of Afghanistan, and the suffering in society. The kind of graceful and joyful words behind the microphones (which the colourful bubbles represent), last for a very short period of time, Ommolbanin believes - "all these promises are just some unsteady words that are not guaranteed to happen. This is brought out on the other side, the painful and colourless results of the so-called promises."
