Patrick Kabanga Lumanga

Main Prize - 2009
The Second Congo War is referred to as the African World War. The war is the world's deadliest conflict since World War II, killing 5.4 million people. Despite the signing of peace accords in 2003, fighting continues in the east of the country. In the east of the Democractic Republic of the Congo, the prevalence of rape and other sexual violence is described as the worst in the world. Patrick has submitted three paintings - 'Why Us?' speaks of the confusion of the most vulnerable to the horrors of war, the children, as horrors surround them. 'The Tear of the Crash' is representative of the grief of the nation over the loss of so many lives. The final submission, 'Sun for All', is to inspire his countrymen to look to the future with hope.
