The Spirit Child phenomena in Northern Ghana is perpetuated by a traditional belief that certain babies are Kinkirigo -- not meant for this world. As such, babies whose mothers die in childbirth, or have other characteristics such as being born deformed, with hair, who cry, do not eat well, or a myriad of defects, are either abandoned to die in the elements or taken to concoction men who poison them.
Operation Sirigu is eliminating the practice. Using theatre, dance and music, AfriKids educates local communities about the truth of Spirit Children. This outreach programme is part of a holistic approach which also targets elders, concoction men and families.
Highlight:
100% success rate in resettling former spirit children.
From four concoction men in 2006, 23 have now joined the association against infanticide.
