Sector: Health

The HIV epidemic in Kenya has decimated the population, hitting the young, income-generating section of society hardest. Estimates of the national prevalence of HIV range from 7% to 15% with peak areas as high as 37% (the third highest prevalence rate in the world).

S.A.F.E. uses theatre, combined with community activities and education, to deliver life-saving information about HIV/AIDS in Kenyan slums and coastal and hinterland communities. A mobile theatre performance is followed by testimonials from People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and public health workers who answer questions and disseminate information regarding preventative measures and treatment services. Leaflets explaining HIV and condoms are also distributed.

One audience member said: When my brother was dying he started to cough, and I wanted to run away. Then I remembered what you had said in the show and I held him, and I held him when he died, and I say thank you.

Highlight:

25% increase in those understanding ARV treatment.

30% increase in those realising you could not tell if someone was infected by looking at them.

Changes in attitude included at least 20% acknowledging that people with HIV have a future and 30% acknowledging the need to protect themselves.

80% of respondents said they would be more likely to use a condom after the show, and 95% of post show respondents said they would be more likely to be tested.

Collaborating hospitals have reported a three to fourfold increase in patient attendance at VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) following S.A.F.E. tours.
