Globally, 68% of all adults infected with HIV and 90% of infected children live in sub-Saharan Africa and 22.5 million human beings out of a global number of 33 million People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) also live there. In 2007, 1.7 million people became infected with HIV, and AIDS killed 1.6 million people making it the leasing cause of death for sub-Saharan Africa. The epidemic has also left another legacy for Africans - 11.4 million AIDS Orphans.
Scenarios from Africa is a competition launched across Sub-Saharan Africa which saw 18,000 scripts received from 43 African countries. Six winning films were then selected for production by top African filmmakers. After shooting the films in English, they will be dubbed in three other languages to ensure their relevance across the region. 25,000 DVD boxed sets will then be distributed to local organisations while mobile film units and local broadcasters will also receive broadcast quality copies. In all, over 165 million are expected to be reached.
