The Recife favelas have seen increased incomes, education and quality of infrastructure and housing due to the country's improved economy. However, drug battles between rival gangs continue to bring the favelas to a standstill, decreasing security and eroding trust from one neighbourhood to another.
Under the guidance of DJ Big, the youths of Ato Perifrico created a safe space through their cooperative in which they develop professional music capacity and business and provide hip hop, digital arts and training programmes to youths. An observer wrote: "This relative safety comes in part from their actions, building civil society and trust between local groups and thus undermining the power of gangs to organize the community on their own."
