Rahab Shine
Main Prize - 2009
The slums in Nairobi, Kenya, are some of the largest in the world. They form the backdrop of Rahab's work, which does not shy away from the harshness of the surrounding area. In his paintings he portrays people struggling to and from work due to narrow streets and flooded areas which cannot be passed by any means of transport. The drainage is poorly planned and leads to disastrous congestion during rainy season. If there were better plans in place to improve the structures and roads, there will be no more congestion and difficulties for slum residents.
