Roxana Saberi
Main Prize - Commended 2011
Roxana’s book tells the story of her imprisonment as an Iranian-American journalist in Iran and the faith and friendships that got her through her ordeal, calling attention to human rights violations in Iran and calling upon readers to take a stand and act together against injustice. Although she was warned by her captors that if she spoke out about her imprisonment, they would hunt her down and kill her, Roxana felt a duty to tell the story of what she had experienced and be a voice for voiceless prisoners, just as others served as a voice for her.
Roxana continues to draw attention to the cause of innocent prisoners, releasing a music album inspired by the people and events in her book and donating a portion of the proceeds to supporting human rights in Iran. She also works to support Iranian journalists and human rights defenders who have fled the country to find them work, support and education.
