Snezana Petrovic
Main Prize - 2009
Snezana describes her work as science fiction combined with surrealism. Wars make new wars, ad infinitum. And man is the eternal victim. The bloody break-up of Yugoslavia, which included the rise of Slobodan Milosevic, saw atrocities committed by all sides. This piece was created as a response to contemporary events in Snezana's country - and in the whole world. The Serbian's painting portrays a wooden doll that is falsely represented to the audience as an alchemist, who will bring people prosperity in the future. People are bewitched by his words and promises and blindly follow him, expecting a favourable outcome, but no one notes that the doll actually cheats, with the help of supporting strings.
