Super Buddies Club
Youth Prize - Finalist 2008
Living as a child in Swaziland means there is a 43% chance of living with the HIV virus after you turn 15. Super Buddies Club is a nationwide, youth network that uses the arts to educate its peers about HIV/AIDS. It is also responsible for Africa's first youth-produced radio drama. Fifteen members of the Club, aged between 14 and 17, worked during their school holidays to write a play about how children's rights are violated through sexual abuse, causing many to flee their homes and be exposed to the virus. Their resulting play was performed at a HIV awareness rally where they made a point of showing that children themselves can play a major role in fighting against abuse by banding together and asserting their rights.
