Tatiana Ferahian
Main Prize - 2009
Tatiana has used 'Time Capsule' to ensure the victims of the Armenian genocide are never forgotten. A large hourglass houses fragments of human bone that Tatiana's mother collected on a visit to the Der Zor desert in Syria. It was here that hundreds of thousands of Armenians died as a result of the deportations the Ottoman Turkish Government carried out in 1915. The work talks of "wraiths entombed in shallow sand as they lie in this point in time, in gloomy cold encase, quarantined by decadence". The piece also reflects how time has stood still for the victims with the current Turkish government denying its role in the atrocities.
