Theatre for a Change

Malawi is a country of 14 million people with a HIV prevalence rate of 11.9%. In the education system, the impact of the virus is most keenly felt through the dramatic erosion of human capital, significantly impairing efforts to tackle poverty. In some schools, up to 40% of the teachers have died from AIDS.

Theatre for a Change has launched an innovative programme in the country's teacher training colleges. All tertiary students studying to become teachers are themselves instructed on how to use theatre to educate their future students about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Already the programme has seen 100% of student teachers volunteer for HIV tests.
