Yang Jian
Main Prize - 2009
Yang Jian's work expresses the anxiety emerging from shifting social, economic and political values in contemporary China. His photo series, White Collar, Red Tie, gestures towards the breakdown of China's communist ideology and system of values. Although very quiet and poetic, Yangs work speaks loudly of the urgent need for revisiting current social and economic driving forces and adopting a new system of values. Despite a vibrant art economy, politically critical or sensitive works are still subject to censorship within China.
