Zarganar

Imprisoned Prize - Winner 2008
Zarganar is Burma's most popular comedian and satirist. He draws inspiration from the Burmese people who have endured nearly five decades of dictatorship. Zarganar was last arrested in June 2008 for making jokes about the government before international media covering Cyclone Nargis. His 59-year sentence was reduced to 35 years. The Burmese government released dozens of prisoners, including political detainees, as part of a general amnesty in October 2011. Popular comedian, Zarganar was among the first to be freed.
