Zugdidi Shalva Dadiani State Drama Theatre
Youth Prize - Finalist 2009
The 2008 South Ossetia War brought into focus the little-understood conflict involving the secessionist movement of the Abkhaz minority, backed by the Russian Federation, Ossetia and Abkhazia, against Georgia. During the conflict, all parties committed serious human right violations. During the 2009 International Children's Day, Abkhazian and the Georgian refugee children living in Georgia were brought together by Irakli Gogia, artistic director of Zugdidi Shalva Dadiani State Drama Theatre, to perform on the Abkhazian-Georgian border. They created a banner, called the Catwalk of Peace, featuring colourful footprints of the children which they then carried across the safe zone. The children also released pigeons, carrying messages of peace, to be received by children on the other side of the border.
